Stone Figures, Vanishing Spires

Eight frames move from carved and cast figures to living passersby and back to pure light: a relief figure in shadow, a tilted plaza, silhouetted towers before a low sun, a portrait before a pale colonnade, carved state names in raking light, a winged horse beside a partly draped figure, a washed-out field of leaves, and curved spires dissolving into a pastel banded sky.

The sequence opens in low bluish light with a carved relief: a muscular figure with flowing hair and drapery set beneath a flat horizontal band, with column-like forms at the upper left. From there it steps into full daylight, where a wide paved plaza tips at a steep angle and two people stand pressed together while scattered visitors thin out toward a line of green trees.

Low warm light carries the middle of the set. High-rise buildings stand in near silhouette against a cloud-banded sky, the low sun glowing in the seam between two towers. A woman in large tortoiseshell sunglasses and a denim jacket faces the camera in warm light before a blurred columned facade, and the colonnade then fills a frame on its own, fluted columns under two carved bands of names that include ILLINOIS, MAINE, MISSOURI, and FLORIDA. A green-patinated sculpture of a winged horse rearing beside a mostly unclothed figure with drapery around the lower body rises from a stone pedestal edged with raised stars.

The set closes on two kinds of dissolve. One frame is almost entirely washed out, pale leafy branches rising into a grainy gray-blue field crossed by a faint yellowish bar. The last frame answers with slender curved spires lifting from the bottom of the frame into a sky banded with peach and lavender, a line of dark treetops tucked into the lower right corner.
