The roll opens close to the ground, where a single daffodil leans into a wall of warm haze. The lens gives it almost nothing to stand against — bare branches dissolve into rose-brown blur, the sky goes to milk — and still the flower insists, white petals flared around a trumpet of undiluted yellow. The color negative stock lets the whole frame drift toward peach, so the bloom reads less like botany and more like a small lit lamp.

The second frame circles the same flower and finds it company: paler daffodils crowd in at the edges, out of focus, a loose congregation of blooms tipping toward the one that holds sharpness. Stems cross the foreground like an afterthought. It is the kind of picture that takes its time, letting the season announce itself in soft repetitions rather than a single statement.

Then the ground opens up. The last frame steps back to take in a modest weathered headstone standing alone in shaggy spring grass, its carved lines softened by a century of weather — the words "Asleep in Jesus" still legible across the top. Purple wildflowers stitch through the turf in the foreground and small yellow blooms scatter behind, so the grave sits inside the season rather than apart from it. The daffodils, it turns out, were never just flowers; they were the memorial's own spring, arriving on schedule.
