Deer Grazing James River, Richmond, Virginia

A haze-washed sequence of a single deer feeding on a sunlit bank above the James River.

It starts as a rumor in the grass: from a high vantage over the James River in Richmond, a bank of dense green brush runs down to rippled water, and somewhere in it a warm brown shape is moving. The first frames barely commit — an ear here, a curve of back there — the deer folded so completely into the vegetation that the river, glittering in late light, nearly steals the picture.

The roll leans closer. In the tall vertical frame the animal resolves at last, head down and feeding on a slope of grass and pale rock, the water reduced to a bright band at the top of the frame. Sunlight floods in from the side and the color negative drinks it up, laying a rose-gold haze over everything — flare blooming across the grass like a second, softer sun.

Then the deer sinks back into cover. By the final frames only a flank shows through the brush, and the last exposure gives most of itself back to the river — a broad field of ripples above the bank, the animal a small bowed silhouette in the weeds. Nothing happens, exactly, and that is the point: one animal, one bank, one slow golden hour on the James, watched from far enough away that it never once looked up.

First sighting: a warm brown back in the green, the river shivering with light behind it.
A deer with one ear raised feeding in tall green vegetation at the edge of rippled river water.
One ear up, head down — the bank does most of the hiding while the light does the rest.
A vertical view down a grassy slope where a deer grazes near a pale rock, with river water at the top of the frame.
The long look down the slope: grass, rock, one grazing deer, and the river held to a bright ribbon.

Mostly gone again — a flank in the weeds, and a globe of flare floating up like a second sun.

The closing frame gives the river the floor; the deer keeps eating, unbothered, at the margin.
