Work Walks — Spring

Spring blossoms on a working day, from scattered branches against the sky to a wall of petals.

It starts with the head tilted back: a few blossom-heavy branches drift across a washed-out blue sky, soft-focused and warm, the flowers rendered in the creamy off-whites that color negative gives to petals in flat light. The second frame widens the tangle — more branches, more bloom, the sky still doing most of the work as backdrop.

Then the camera almost loses the subject entirely. One frame is nearly all sky, a pale haze with a single flowering branch entering from the lower right corner like an afterthought — the kind of frame you only keep because it tells the truth about looking up too long. It is the breath before the plunge.

The last two frames give up on distance. The lens pushes straight into the canopy: blossoms stacked on blossoms, dark branches threading through, a flicker of warm orange glimpsed somewhere behind the petals. By the final exposure the flowers fill every corner of the frame, a dense, grainy field of white with nowhere left for the sky. A walk that began under the tree ends inside it.

Soft-focus branches covered in pale blossoms against a light blue-gray sky.
First look up: blossoms swim in and out of focus, more suggestion than flower.
A wider tangle of thin branches with clusters of white blossoms, seen from below against a hazy sky.
The tangle widens — thin dark limbs stitch the bloom together against a sky that can't decide on blue.
A mostly empty pale sky with a single blossoming branch entering from the lower right corner.
Nearly all sky — one flowering branch sneaks in at the corner, as if the tree refused to leave the frame.
A dense mass of white blossoms and dark branches filling the frame, with blurred warm orange shapes visible behind them.
Inside the canopy now — petals in every direction, and something warm and orange burning softly behind the branches.
Close view of blossom clusters filling the entire frame, with one sprig in focus in front of a soft field of flowers.
The last frame gives up on sky altogether: one sharp sprig against an ocean of out-of-focus bloom.
