Boat Ride

One roll afloat off Bali — anchored masts, grey horizons, teak decks, and an island seen through mist.

Bali, Bali, Indonesia / 35mm color negative (stock unidentified) / Boat Ride — Bali collection, 35mm film archive

The roll opens at anchor. A two-masted schooner sits on flat grey water, its rigging drawn in thin lines against an overcast sky, with a scatter of smaller boats strung along the far shoreline. Then the land drops away entirely: a frame that is almost all cloud, the horizon a faint seam where a silvered sea meets weather that hasn't decided what it wants to do.

From there the camera stays aboard and looks closer. Over the bow rail, three snorkelers drift in green water, masks up, treading between the hull and whatever they came to see. Two men settle on the teak foredeck and watch the water go by, one in a cap, one in sunglasses, the anchor gear waiting ahead of them. The deck itself becomes the subject — planks crossed by a soft-edged shadow, then bare feet and legs sprawled around a cut coconut, the universal proof that nobody is in a hurry.

The last frames pull back toward land. In the wheelhouse a figure stands silhouetted at the helm, hills and rooftops doubling in the curved windscreen while reflections swim across the cabin ceiling. And finally, from above, a low green islet trails its pale line of surf into the mist — Bali's coast reduced to one quiet shape between sea and sky, the color negative holding all of it in the same soft grey-green light.
