Dominican Republic

Beach light, back roads, and everything the windshield caught in between.

The roll opens at the waterline, where the light does most of the talking. Palms lean out over a pale beach like they're checking on the sea, and the figures beneath them are small and unhurried. A frame later the camera is nearly in the sand itself, focus pooled on the foam while a scatter of heads bobs in the swell, the sky and water dissolving into the same warm gray. Then the film folds over on itself: a coconut crown burned into a bright sky, veiled by a second pass of dark leaves, an accidental canopy stitched from two moments.

When the sun finally commits, the beach turns postcard-blue. A couple stands square to the lens in white and pink and sea-green, palms arcing behind them, bathers wading in the shallows, a soft mountain closing the bay. It is the one posed frame on the roll, and the island obliges with a leaning palm and a sky full of cooperative clouds.

The rest belongs to the road. A man in a ball cap idles on his motorbike beside a fence line of bare posts and blazing pink bougainvillea, a red-canopied stall doing quiet business behind him. Through a car window the highway bends past mint and turquoise houses, a rider tucked low into the curve ahead. And then, the roll's last word: a battered red stock truck filling the windshield, cattle swaying in the slatted frame under an overcast sky, the hills going green on either side. Beach to backroad, the whole crossing in thirty-six exposures or fewer.

Palm trees lean over a pale beach toward a hazy sea, with small figures gathered near the shoreline.
The palms bow toward the water as if listening; the sea answers in silver. Everyone on the sand is a small dark note in a very quiet bar of music.
A low, close view of surf breaking on sand, with the heads of several swimmers visible in the water beyond.
Down at crab height, the foam takes the foreground and the swimmers become punctuation. The whole ocean reduced to a soft line and a few dark heads.
A double exposure layers a palm tree crown against a bright sky with dark broad leaves framing the edges of the image.
Two canopies argue politely over one frame: the palm holding the sky, the broadleaf crowding in from every edge. The film keeps both and calls it jungle.
A woman in a white top and a man in a pink shirt stand together on a sunny beach with palm trees, turquoise water, and bathers behind them.
The one frame where everyone agrees to hold still: white cotton, pink linen, sunglasses squared to the lens. Behind them the island keeps moving anyway.
A tall coconut palm leans across a sunny beach under blue sky, with a green hill visible across the water.
One palm does all the leaning for the whole beach, drawn like a long diagonal signature across the sky. Across the bay, a hill sits green and patient.
A man in a cap sits on a motorbike beside a roadside fence of bare posts, near pink flowering shrubs and a stall with a red awning.
The bike idles, the bougainvillea blazes, the red awning keeps its shade to itself. A whole afternoon balanced on a kickstand.
A two-lane road curves past pastel houses and power lines while a motorbike rider leans into the bend ahead.
The road bends and the rider bends with it, tucked low past mint and turquoise houses. Through the windshield, the whole town becomes a passing thought.
A red slatted cattle truck seen from behind on a road, with cows visible inside and green hills along the roadside.
The last frame on the road belongs to the cattle, swaying in their red steel corral at highway speed. The sky stays gray; the hills stay green; the truck stays exactly ahead.
