After the Sun Leaves the Frame

A three-frame study of a single low sun over open water: the sun on the horizon, an overlapping translucent structure sharing the same sky, and the amber horizon light that remains once no sun is visible.

The sequence opens with the simplest possible arrangement: a small red-orange sun resting exactly on the sea horizon, a heavy shelf of gray cloud above it and calm gray-blue water filling the lower half of the frame. Nothing else interrupts the view: only sun, cloud, sky, and sea.

The second frame complicates that emptiness. Curved, multi-bar railings top a broad pale curving surface that sweeps down to the lower right edge, with dark vertical supports beneath the left end of the rail and a tall mast-like form rising above the curve; all of it appears translucent over the same seascape, so the structure and the low sun share one space. The small orange sun sits right at the outer edge of the curving rail, threaded between its bars. Whether the overlay comes from a reflection or a doubled exposure cannot be determined from the frame itself.

The final frame holds no sun at all. What remains is an amber seam of light pressed along the horizon between darker cloud and sea, while the water in the foreground turns dark and finely rippled. Together the three frames read as one continuous dusk sequence, from the disc at the waterline to a horizon lit only by a band of amber.
