Sunset
Dusk at sea from a ship's rail, shot on 35mm color negative en route to the Bahamas.
A short roll shot from the rail of a cruise ship somewhere on the water toward the Bahamas, watching the day end the only way it can out here: slowly, then all at once. The first frame is the classic arrangement — a small red sun balanced exactly on the horizon line, a shelf of gray cloud hanging above it, the sea below already giving up its color. Nothing else in the frame. At sea there is nothing else to put in it.
Then the film does something the eye can't. In the second frame the ship itself surfaces inside the view — the sweep of an upper-deck rail, a mast, the long curve of the superstructure — ghosted over the same horizon, so that the vessel and the sunset occupy one sky. Whether by glass or by the negative's own doubling, the frame quietly admits what every ocean sunset picture leaves out: the thing you're standing on.
The last frame is the after-image. The sun is gone, and what remains is an amber seam of light pressed between cloud and water, the sea gone slate and rippled in the foreground. Shot on 35mm color negative, the grain softens everything into haze, which is roughly how these evenings are remembered anyway.
