Mountains, Flying from Japan to Bali

A window-seat roll of layered ridgelines and a single white summit, watched from cruising altitude.

A window-seat roll from the crossing between Japan and Bali, where the whole world reduces to three bands: cloud above, haze between, and ridge after ridge of blue mountains below. In the middle of it all sits one snow-capped summit, the only thing in the landscape with edges, appearing first as a faint silhouette in the pink-grey murk and slowly hardening as the air clears.

The sequence works like a slow pan you didn't plan. Frame by frame the haze thins, the ridgelines separate into receding layers of darker and lighter blue, and the white peak drifts across the window from center to left and back again. One frame tips vertical, catching the horizon on a diagonal with the summit small beneath a heavy shelf of cloud, the way a view actually looks when you lean into the glass.

By the last exposure a second, fainter peak has surfaced far off on the left, and the first now anchors the right edge of the frame, its snow catching light above the blue. The color negative gives the set its soft, breathable palette: a violet cast in the early frames, then cooler, cleaner blues as the atmosphere relents. Nothing happens, exactly, and that is the point; it is thirty-odd thousand feet of patience on 35mm.
