A loose crossing roll that drifts between the ship's high vantage points and the bright, wind-scoured shore.

The roll keeps returning to the edge of the ship. It starts pressed against a railing, looking straight down at the wake tearing white gashes into dark water, and ends the same way — this time over a lower deck where a handful of crew in orange vests gather around their gear while the whole sea glitters behind them like hammered metal. In between there is one frame that barely resolves at all: a single pale mullion splitting a fogged sunset, the horizon reduced to bands of peach and slate behind glass. On a boat this size, even the abstract pictures are about distance.

Ashore, the volume comes up. A marching band in white fringed costumes pushes through palm shade and hard Bahamian sun, sousaphone bells flashing, a goatskin-style drum mid-swing, sequined panels catching every color the sky won't. It is the loudest frame on the roll and the only crowded one — everything before and after it is mostly water and air.

The last beaches stretch the roll back out. In one, the cruise ship waits at the far left while a long pier runs clear across the frame and a lone walker in a patterned wrap picks along the tide line past a trail of footprints. In the other, the sand goes nearly white, the surf goes green, and a single distant figure in orange stands at the waterline like a dropped marker. Shot on 35mm color negative, the whole set reads as what it is: loose ends from a crossing, held together by salt light.
