Edges of a Day at Sea

A loose sequence of standalone frames held together by water: views down from a ship's height, an abstract pane of hazy light, one crowded burst of costumed musicians, and wide, nearly empty beaches.

The sequence opens and closes from height. In the first frame, blurred railing bars cross the top of the picture while churned white foam spreads over dark water beside a long white shipboard structure; in the last, workers in orange high-visibility vests cluster near the edge of a pale paved surface far below, their shadows stretched long across painted yellow lines while dark green water ripples beyond them.

Between those bookends the register shifts twice. One frame dissolves almost entirely: a thin bright vertical strip splits a hazy field of gray, green, and pale peach that darkens toward the bottom, closer to a color study than a scene. Another swings the opposite way, filling the frame with musicians in white outfits trimmed with feathery fringe and decorated panels, a silver sousaphone raised over the group and a blue drum mid-beat under palm trees and a bright, washed-out sky.

Two beaches let the set breathe out. In one, a person in a flowing patterned dress walks the wet sand past scattered footprints while a long pier crosses the surf toward a large white ship waiting at the left. In the other, pale sand marked with track lines runs down to rows of green breakers, and a single distant figure holding an orange object stands near the waterline under a wide blue sky.
