FLA Loosies

Stray 35mm color negative frames from Florida — hard light, sanctuary glow, and red water off the edge of a dock.

Florida, United States / 35mm color negative (stock unidentified) / FLA Loosies — FLA Loosies collection, 35mm film archive

The roll opens sideways, and stays that way: a barefoot figure in sunglasses and a loose, wide-cut shirt stands against a pale wall while a hard diagonal of Florida sun slices the frame in two. The pose is casual, the light is not. Half the wall burns, half of it waits in shadow, and the figure holds the seam between them like it was rehearsed.

Then the light goes indoors and turns blue. In a dark-walled sanctuary, a wooden cross hangs against a stone panel washed in aquarium color, framed in white trim like a picture of itself. Below it, a man in a white shirt leans into an upright piano while another stands off to the side, grinning at something outside the frame. It is the quietest exposure on the roll and somehow the most staged-looking, though nobody in it is posing.

The last frame looks straight down and finds Florida at its strangest: water gone rust-red under a green-painted dock, a perforated metal strut reaching out over the surface, barnacled clusters crowding the piling below. Sun blade, blue cross, red water — loose ends by any accounting, but laid side by side they read like one afternoon that kept changing its mind about what kind of light it wanted to be.

Sideways-oriented frame of a barefoot person in sunglasses and a loose light-purple shirt standing against a pale wall crossed by a diagonal band of sunlight.
The frame tips on its side and the light doesn't care — a hard blade of sun splits the wall, and the figure stands right on the seam.
A dark-walled sanctuary where a wooden cross on a blue-lit stone panel hangs above an upright piano, with one man seated at the keys and another standing nearby.
Blue light pools behind the cross like water held in a frame; below it, someone finds the keys while someone else finds a joke.
View straight down from a green metal dock structure at reddish water, with a perforated metal strut extending over the surface and barnacle-covered clusters below.
Off the edge of the dock the water runs rust-red, and the barnacles keep their own quiet ledger on the piling.
