Heart Film Stock — Mall Food and Rooftop Lunch

One heart-strewn roll from basement food stall to rooftop sky, where signs, shadows, flowers, and butterflies all get the same affectionate treatment.

Japan / 35mm color negative (Heart film stock noted in folder) / Heart Film Stock — Mall Food and Rooftop Lunch — Japan collection, 35mm film archive

The roll opens in the working heat of a food hall: a cook in a white tee and dark cap grates something over an enormous steel vat of shredded white confection, motion-blurred mid-stroke, stockpots and supply boxes crowding the shelves behind. The film has already started editorializing — its pre-exposed hearts drift into the frame like the stall's own steam, turning an ordinary lunch counter into something a little besotted with itself.

Then up and out. A huge red-and-white circular sign rides a rooftop mast against a hazy blue sky, a stepped clock tower standing ghost-grey behind it, and the stock's warm heart flares hang in the air like escaped balloons. Through a wire mesh fence the same sign reappears at an angle, sharing the sky with a rooftop tree, distant trusswork, and one small airplane. Even the shadows cooperate: railing bars stripe a wall while an orange heart outlines itself across them, as if traced there by hand.

The last frames slow down in the rooftop planting — sprays of white flowers among long green blades, skipper butterflies working the blossoms, hearts in pink, red, and acid green settling over the leaves. Then back downstairs for a final look through the food stall's glass case: the cook bent over the wide round pan, a customer waiting, and a small constellation of hearts stuck to the surface between us and lunch. The roll never pretends to be objective; it loves everything it sees, indiscriminately.

A cook in a white t-shirt and dark cap grates food over a large round steel vat filled with shredded white confection in a food stall kitchen.
Mid-stroke over the great white vat — the grater blurs, the mound grows, and the shelves of stockpots look on.
A large circular red-and-white sign with a single painted character stands on a rooftop mast, with a stepped clock tower rising behind it against a blue sky.
The rooftop's great red seal against a summer sky, a stepped tower keeping watch behind, hearts adrift in the haze.
A wire mesh fence angles across a cloudy sky, with the edge of a round red sign, a rooftop tree, distant trusswork, and a small airplane visible.
Looking up through the rooftop fence: sign, tree, scaffold, one passing plane, and an orange heart snuck into the corner.
Shadows of vertical railing bars stripe a pale wall, overlaid with an orange heart-shaped outline and small red heart flares.
The railing writes its bars across the wall and the film answers with a heart, traced in orange light.
Green leafy branches with clusters of small white flowers, overlaid with several pink and red heart-shaped light flares.
A branch of white blossoms leans into the frame and the hearts gather around it like confetti that knows where to land.
Long grass blades and hanging clusters of white flowers with a small brown butterfly resting among them, overlaid with heart-shaped flares.
A skipper folds itself into the white blossoms while outlined hearts drift through the grass like escaped doodles.
Close view of white flower clusters and grass blades with an orange butterfly among them, overlaid with an orange looped heart and green heart outlines.
Closer still: an orange skipper in the blossoms, a looped heart flung across the grass, green hearts pooling at the bottom edge.
Seen through a glass case, a food stall worker reaches over a large round pan of white dessert while a woman stands at the counter.
Back downstairs through the glass: the wide pan, the reaching arm, the waiting customer, and hearts stuck to the pane between.
