Shibuya Randoms

A loose night roll through Shibuya, from a burned frame edge to bandanas, neon corners, and mirrored stairs.

Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan / 35mm color negative (stock unidentified) / Shibuya Randoms — Japan collection, 35mm film archive

The roll opens the way rolls sometimes do — with fire. A near-black frame split by vertical bands of red-orange where light found its way in, the right edge blown to white. It reads less like a mistake than a warning shot: everything after this will glow.

Then the camera tips upward. A figure in a pale jacket blurs past, shot from below, and behind them the ceiling is strung with tie-dye bandanas hung on their points like festival pennants. One frame later the banners get their close-up — a turquoise square printed with the words 'tie dye kids' above a sunburst of orange, ceiling lights burning straight through the thin cotton.

Outside, the architecture takes over the color work. A building corner wears a ribbon of hot pink neon along its edge, curved red shapes swelling at either side while a striped tower hangs in the dark behind it. The roll ends inside a canyon of magenta mirror: a staircase with glass railings switchbacking through crumpled reflective panels, a chrome slatted fence at its foot, every surface throwing the pink back at the lens. Shibuya at night, caught sideways and looking up.

The roll announces itself: darkness, two ribbons of fire, and an edge burned clean through.

Shot from the floor looking up, a stranger in pale cotton dissolves into motion beneath a ceiling of hung tie-dye.
Two tie-dye bandanas hang point-down from a dark slatted ceiling; the upper turquoise one is printed with the words tie dye kids, and lights glow through the orange one below.
