Daikoku

A short nocturne of parked horsepower — sport bike fairings and headlight flare on 35mm color negative.

Japan / 35mm color negative (stock unidentified) / Daikoku — Japan collection, 35mm film archive

The roll opens close, almost too close: a white Yamaha sport bike shoulders into the frame, a bare arm reaching down to a gloved hand on the clip-on bars. The flash picks out every decal on the fairing while the night behind dissolves into black, pricked by a few distant lamps. Nobody is going anywhere yet — this is the pose of a machine being held, not ridden.

The second frame steps back and drops low. The Yamaha's front wheel and gold-legged forks take center stage, brake discs catching the light, YAMAHA spelled out along the lower cowl. Behind it, the pale haunch of a sports car curves through the darkness, half-swallowed by shadow — the quiet acknowledgment that at a gathering like this, there is always another machine waiting just outside the light.

Then the cars answer. The last frame crouches at bumper height before a blue coupe, its headlight blooming into a small star against the night, mesh vents and badges surfacing from the dark blue paint. Shot on 35mm color negative, the whole set stays inside that narrow pool of flash and glare — a nocturne about proximity, chrome, and the patience of parked horsepower somewhere in Japan.

An arm, a glove, a white fairing — the night holds its breath around the handlebars. Everything beyond the flash simply ceases to exist.
