The camera in question was a compact with opinions: its date-back burned a confident orange timestamp into the corner of nearly every frame, and the date it insisted on was wrong. So the roll arrives out of time — a night in Japan that officially happened on a day it didn't. What the little lens actually caught is unmistakable, though: streets after dark, held by hand, with the shutter open long enough to let the city move.

It opens quietly, with two pale cat-faced figures glowing in a shop window like they were left on duty overnight, one in a white dress with a red accent at the collar. Then the roll tips its head back — a Godzilla-shaped silhouette looming on a pink-lit signboard, katakana columns and a CASINO sign stacked on either side — and plunges into the streets themselves, where a whole avenue of signage smears into vertical streaks of pink, yellow, and blue above a crowd reduced to shadow at the crossing.

The camera keeps riding. It looks over a red helmet at a scooter idling in an intersection, drags the lit windows of an office tower into nervous golden doubles above a walkway railing, and catches a blue car mid-slide, its chrome pulled into ribbons. It ends at a street stall strung with bare bulbs and lanterns, brushed calligraphy floating overhead like the night talking to itself — every frame time-stamped, every timestamp a small, cheerful lie.
