A night roll through Japan's glowing signage, lantern alleys, tagged shutters, and pure neon.

The roll opens looking up. A whole building given over to light: tiers of yellow lanterns stacked like honeycomb, banners and painted boards climbing every floor, a grinning cartoon face presiding over the words KUSHIDAORE. Below it the ordinary machinery of the street — a curved lamppost in silhouette, a green pedestrian signal, a no-entry sign — holds its ground against all that wattage. On color negative the lanterns burn amber and the sky above simply gives up and goes black.

Then the light comes down to eye level. A covered eating lane runs off into the distance under strings of paper lanterns, red beams and tiled eaves overhead, wooden tables and round stools waiting in rows. A large lantern lettered for an Okinawan food market anchors the foreground while a passerby blurs through the frame, too hungry or too quick for a fortieth of a second. Farther in, diners are small warm shapes under the same repeating glow.

The last two frames trade warmth for voltage. A white road bike leans on a wall so densely tagged it reads like a group signature — loops of black and green spray, one clear SIDE, a mahjong parlor's sign glowing at the edge. And then the closer: a wall-sized neon character, part fox and part sneakerhead, one paw flashing a peace sign, drawn in pink, teal, red, and yellow tube against the dark. The night ends not with quiet but with the brightest drawing on the block.
