Close, Then Far
Eight frames move from surface to room: two macro studies of pattern and fiber, a wall of small gold-framed landscapes and a single frame corner, then a gallery interior, a painting of dancers, a heavily framed dreamlike scene, and a painted stone relief.
The sequence opens at point-blank range. An orange paisley shape crowded with small flowers presses against a dark frame edge, and a few frames later the lens sinks into a field of red, gold, and green strands where the object itself disappears and only texture and glints remain.
Then the camera backs up. Twelve small oval and round landscapes in gold frames hang in a diamond on a pale wall while two visitors stand in silhouette at the edges. One gilt corner gets its own study, its carved rim throwing a sawtooth shadow down the wall. A wider view shows a geometric canvas on a dark wall beside a profile portrait of a woman with an afro on a freestanding panel.
The roll closes on three very different pictures seen in full: six dancers in pink leaning into one step, a nude figure on a pedestal above a crowd inside a heavy red-bordered frame, and the red-painted legs of a striding figure carved into pale stone, one hand holding an ankh.
